The Medieval Merchant's House is owned and run by English Heritage. Opening hours 1 April - 30 September, 10am - 6pm daily. 1 - 31 October, 10am - 5pm daily. The medieval house at 58 French Street is one of the earliest surviving merchant’s houses in England. It was both a residence and a place of business in the lively port of Southampton where traders from all over Europe and the middle east, including Bordeaux, Genoa and Venice landed cargoes of wine and other goods. French Street at this time was the Southampton 'high street". It was named after the merchants who settled in Southampton after the Norman Conquest and helped to establish the town as one of the most important trading ports of medieval England.
