Southampton's prosperity during the medieval period is reflected by the town walls, towers and gates (including the Bargate), and many other buildings in the Old Town such as the Wool House, Tudor House Museum, and St Michael's Church.
About half of the original one mile of town walls survives, with nearly half of the original 29 towers and six of the eight gates still standing.
After the Norman invasion of 1066, Southampton became the largest port on the south coast, developing trade links with France and then the rest of Europe and the Mediterranean. The town's success as a port lasted right through to the 1500s.
The chief trade was the import of wine and the export of wool.
